Cost: $150 (Lunch and refreshments will not be provided, bring bag lunch)

Description:

This 8-hour class prepares students with the necessary knowledge and skills to enhance the safety of both workers and drivers in a work zone. Students who successfully pass the open-book knowledge exam with a score of 80% or better will receive a Washington State Flagger certification card that is valid for 3 years and can be used in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana.

What you'll learn

  • The requirements for becoming a flagger
  • The agencies and regulations that govern flagging
  • The clothing and equipment that you’ll need to have on the job
  • What goes into setting up a Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) zone, including warning devices, spacing, and where a flagger fits in
  • Flagger placement and how to signal using a STOP/SLOW paddle, flashlight, or red flag
  • How to keep yourself and others safe in the work zone
  • Special situations such as flagging at intersections, roundabouts, and railroad crossings

Requirements

  • Age: Certified Washington State Flaggers must be at least 18 years old. You may be permitted to complete the Washington State Flagger certification course prior to turning 18, but you will not receive your certification, nor will you be eligible to work as a Flagger, until after you have turned 18.
  • Physical requirements: For a list of physical requirements and demands that pertain to flaggers, please CLICK HERE. Please note that your employer's policy may have fewer, additional, or differing requirements than those listed. Check with your employer to ensure you are familiar with the physical demands and requirements that pertain to you.

Documentation

  • You must bring photo identification to class. State- or government-issued identification (such as a state ID card, driver's license, or passport) is preferred.

Schedule

  • Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before class so that they can get checked in. There will be a 30-minute lunch and short morning/afternoon breaks. Please bring your lunch or purchase lunch from a nearby cafe. During the final portion of the class, students will complete the Washington State Flagger certification exam.

Student materials

  • Student materials will be provided to you during class at no additional charge.

Certification

  • A Washington State Flagger certification will be awarded to students who complete the following:
    • Attend the full 8-hour Flagger certification course
    • Provide a photo ID verifying their identity and required minimum age
    • Score 80% or better on the certification exam
  • A digital copy of the certification will be emailed to you, and the official paper certification will be mailed to the address you provided during registration. Note that the digital copy of the certification is not valid for work as a Flagger. You must have a paper copy of your certification on your person at all times while operating as a Flagger.
  • Certification is valid for 3 years.

Retests

  • Per Washington State guidelines, if you do not pass the exam, you must retake the entire course.

Instructor Bio:

Lori Copeland is a Technical Training Specialist with nearly three decades of experience designing and delivering industry-specific training programs for highway agencies. At the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), she specializes in developing and leading courses in traffic control, inspector qualification, material sampling and testing, nuclear safety, winter maintenance, hazardous materials, plans and specifications and entry-level driver training, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. As an Innovation Steward, Lori continuously enhances training methods to improve workforce development. She also plays a key role in instructor mentorship and statewide program oversight, making complex topics accessible and practical for industry professionals.
